About DigiMig

The DigiMig project is led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çiğdem Bozdağ at the University of Groningen and is funded by the NWO Vidi Talent Scheme (2024-2028). We investigate how social and cultural factors influence digital inclusion for people with a migration history in the Netherlands. The project focuses on three key areas:

  • How digital media is used by families with a migration history, with attention to both parents and children.
  • How digital inclusion policies take cultural diversity into account.
  • How digital literacy is taught in schools with diverse student populations.

The project has a team of researchers, including Dr. Bozdağ, Denise Mensonides as postdoctoral researcher and Rosa Dijkstra as PhD student. An advisory board of experts in the fields of migration, media, education and digital inclusion policy supports the project.

Objectives and approach of the project

In today’s world, being able to use digital technology is essential for participation in society. However, digital inclusion – the idea that everyone should have equal access to and skills in the use of digital technologies – is influenced not only by personal factors such as motivation and skills, but also by social and cultural factors such as age, gender, income, ethnicity and migration history.

The DigiMig project investigates these issues in the Netherlands, with a focus on both the experiences of families with a migration history and policies designed to promote digital inclusion. The project has four main objectives:

  1. Research on digital inclusion among families with a migration history: understanding how different migrant groups use digital technologies, with a focus on Turkish-Dutch and Moroccan-Dutch families in both urban areas such as Rotterdam and rural areas such as Groningen.
  2. Digital inclusion policy analysis: assess national and local policies to see how they address cultural diversity and digital inclusion, and suggest improvements based on expert insights.
  3. Improving digital literacy in schools: working with teachers, students and parents to develop better ways of teaching digital literacy in schools with diverse student populations.
  4. Developing a new framework for digital inclusion: developing a comprehensive approach to studying and supporting digital inclusion that takes into account socio-cultural factors.

The project combines research in the field of media, migration and education to better understand and improve digital inclusion for migrant communities in the Netherlands.
