Halfway through September our Digimig research team traveled to Tallinn in Estonia, for the conference of the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA), sections Diaspora, Migration and the Media – International and Intercultural Communication. with the theme “Beyond Borders: Creative Methods and Reflexive Approaches to Migration, Media, and Intercultural Dialogue”. The conference offered an inspiring stage to share results from our project for the first time.
First results of Digimig
DigiMig is a project that investigates the digital inclusion of culturally diverse residents of the Netherlands. We want to understand how policy, technology and daily life influence each other and thus develop knowledge that can contribute to a more inclusive digital society.
For the very first time we presented results from our current research. Postdoc researcher Denise Mensonides, together with Çiğdem Bozdağ, shared insights on how European policy frameworks for digital inclusion deal with cultural diversity. Their analysis showed that although there are opportunities to make more inclusive policies, there are also important challenges and blind spots. In this way, the question becomes central to which votes and needs are actually taken into account in the development of digital strategies.
PhD candidate Rosa Dijkstra showed how she uses a creative method: intergenerational participative design sessions. In addition, parents and children make prototypes of mobile apps together. This approach not only provides new ideas for digital applications, but also provides insight into how digital inclusion is experienced within families. Rosa’s research is currently focusing on families in Groningen and Rotterdam.

Tallinn was an important moment for Digimig: the first time we brought out research results. We look forward to sharing more findings in the coming months.
👉 Curious about what is to come? Soon we will start a Webinar series In which digimig researchers and guest speakers discuss themes around digital inclusion, migration and diversity.
